Fulbright Capacity Building Workshop, June 11 to 17, 2017

Within the series of U.S. Study Abroad Capacity Building Workshops initiated by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission organized a workshop designed to increase U.S. student mobility to Romania. The event titled “Attracting U.S. Students to Romania: A Fulbright Capacity-Building Workshop” took place in Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca, between June 11 and June 17, 2017.

The workshop brought together U.S. and Romanian higher education administrators and study abroad managers and gave a comprehensive and accurate view of the opportunities and resources offered by Romanian higher education institutions. The workshop combined visits to Romanian universities, roundtable discussions with Romanian faculty and administrators, meetings with governmental representatives, decision-makers and members of higher education community. The events took place in the top two academic cities of Romania: Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca.

On Wednesday, June 14, the 11 U.S. participants coming from prestigious American universities met high representatives of the U.S. Embassy, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, the Romanian Presidency, the Fulbright Board of Directors and participated in a roundtable hosted at Cotroceni Palace together with representatives of the most important Romanian university centers – Bucharest, Iasi, Timisoara, Brasov, Sibiu, Constanta. Later in the evening, the workshop participants attended the Reception hosted by U.S. Ambassador Hans Klemm at his residence.

Thanks to the intense dialogues during the impressive series of meetings in Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca, the workshop has opened the perspective of intense future cooperation among the U.S. participants and Romanian universities and bring about an increase of U.S. student mobility to Romania.
