What is the test good for?
The test measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand English in an academic context.

The TOEFL is commonly required for admission to U.S. study programs of applicants whose mother tongue is other than English. Currently more than 2,000 universities in North America and many others all over the world require the TOEFL score for admission purposes.

What is it like?

Currently, the test is available in Romania in the Internet-based format (iBT) in Bucharest, Arad, Baia Mare, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Oradea and Timisoara.

In what follows we will refer to the iBT version of the test.

According to the information available on the official website www.ets.org, the TOEFL iBT has four sections:

  • Reading measures the ability to understand academic reading material. The section takes 60 - 100 minutes and includes 12-14 questions for each of the 3-5 passages.

  • Listening measures the ability to understand spoken English as used in colleges and universities. The section takes 60-90 minutes and includes 34 -51 questions.

  • Speaking measures the ability to communicate orally in an academic context. This section requires you to solve 6 tasks in 20 minutes. 4 of the tasks involve integration of language skills.

  • Writing measures the ability to write in a way that is appropriate for college and university course work. You will have to write an integrated task in 20 minutes and an independent task in 30 minutes.

Each section is scored from 0 to 30, and the total score ranges from 0 to 120.

The test emphasizes integrated language skills and assesses your ability to communicate effectively for study purposes in an American environment.

The test is administered via Internet and is approximately four hours long.

How is this test administered in Romania?
According to the information currently available on the official website of the test, in Romania the TOEFL test is only administered in its iBT format (see below). TIMISOARA:

Please note that not all the test centers above administer the TOEFL year-round. Please visit the official website www.ets.org/toefl to check which test centers are available in the time period you are planning to take the test in.

How much does the test cost?

The test fee varies by country. According to the information available on the official website www.ets.org/toefl, in Romania the test fee is $200 for the IBT version.

The test fee entitles you to one score report, for your information, plus up to four official score reports that ETS will send directly to the institutions you designate when you register. You cannot select your score recipients at the test center. For each institution that you select after the test, you will have to pay a $17 fee. ETS will send the score record to you and to your designated institutions two weeks after the test date.

Return to your online profile the day before the test and check your confirmation to check if any changes have been made to your registration details (for example, a different building or start time).

2. By phone: call the telephone number for the Regional Registration Center (RRC) for the country in which you plan to test at least seven days before the requested test date. According to page 18 of the 2011-2012 TOEFL iBT Information and Registration Bulletin, if you plan on testing in Romania, you should contact the RRC for Region 12 (registration phone: 31-320-239-540; fax: 31-320-239-541; e-mail: www.prometric.com/testtakers/contactus/email.htm. 3. If a credit/debit card is not available, you can pay by bank check and register by mail:

  • In order to be issued a bank check you need to pay the fee to any bank that conducts hard-currency transactions. The beneficiary of your bank check will be ETS-TOEFL IBT, as mentioned on page 8 of the 2011-2012 TOEFL Information and Registration Bulletin.

  • You fill out the TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) Registration Form which is 4 pages long and included in the bulletin (between pages 26-29). Be sure to fill in all four pages, and staple the completed form before mailing.

The information bulletin includes all the contact addresses and telephone numbers. The bulletin can be downloaded free of charge from the official website www.ets.org/toefl.

When do I get the official scores?

According to the information on the official website and on page 12 in the bulletin, scores are posted online within 2 weeks after the test date, then they are mailed to you and your designated institutions.

Score reporting preferences

Starting August 2011, in order to be more “green” and reduce paper and shipping, ETS will send paper copies of score reports only if the student selects this option during registration. This means online scores only will be the default method of delivery unless a test taker selects the paper score option.

Students have up until 10:00 PM the day before the test to make changes in their score reporting preferences.

Additional information regarding TOEFL scores

The institutions you are applying to generally request scores for one of the versions of the test. Since there are significant differences among the 3 tests, it is rather difficult to establish exact comparisons between scores.

What is the test good for?
The SAT is one of the admission requirements to an undergraduate program in the U.S., for American and international students alike.
The SAT assesses your reasoning abilities and academic strengths. The SAT scores help U.S. admissions officers compare your reasoning abilities and academic strengths with those of more than 2 million students who take these tests each year.

What is it like?

SAT actually represents two distinct tests: SAT Reasoning Test, also known as SAT I, and SAT Subject Tests, commonly referred to as SAT II.

SAT Reasoning Test

According to the official website www.collegeboard.com the SAT Reasoning Test measures the critical thinking skills you'll need for academic success in college.

The three sections of the SAT Reasoning test are:

  • critical reading which has sentence completion and passage-based questions;

  • mathematics which requires math skills that students typically acquire during their first three years of high school (arithmetic, algebra, geometry). Every question on the SAT Reasoning Test can be solved without a calculator; however, a calculator on some questions may be helpful to you. A scientific or graphing calculator is recommended.

  • writing which involves multiple-choice questions and a written essay.

In addition, there is one unscored section, known as the variable section. This unscored section may be either a critical reading, mathematics, or writing multiple-choice section. According to the information posted on the official website, this unscored section doesn’t count toward the final score, but it is used to try out new questions for future editions of the SAT.

The essay will always be the first section of the SAT, and the multiple-choice writing section will always be the final section. All the other sections can appear in any order. Test takers sitting next to each other in the same testing session may have test books with entirely different sections.

The test is administered in the paper and pencil format and is about 4 hours long.
Each section of the SAT is scored on a scale of 200-800, with two writing subscores in the Writing section for multiple-choice questions and the essay.

Subject Tests

Subject Tests measure your knowledge of particular subjects (literature, history, foreign languages, math, physics etc.) and your ability to apply that knowledge. Many U.S. colleges require or recommend one or more Subject Tests for admission or placement.

Colleges which don’t require Subject Tests will still take them into consideration, since the tests offer a better picture of your academic abilities.

Subject Tests are also administered in the paper and pencil format. They contain multiple-choice questions and take one hour to complete.

Each test is scored on a scale of 200-800.

Acceptable Equipment for some Subject Tests (information available in the bulletin and on the official website):

If you take Mathematics, College Board requires that you use a scientific or graphing calculator for the SAT Subject Tests in Mathematics. No calculators allowed for all the other Subject Tests.

If you take a Language Test with Listening, you will need to bring a portable battery-operated CD player, equipped with earphones. Further details about the CD player policy are available at http://www.collegeboard.com

How is this test administered in Romania ?

The SAT is administered six times a year in Romania at test centers located in Bucharest (see below), Arad (Vasile Goldis high school), Baia Mare (No. 5 School), Constanta (Mircea cel Batran high school) and Iasi (Euroed Foundation). Please check the official website to see if the test can be taken at your choice center on the dates announced in the information bulletin and posted on the official website.

According to the information currently available on the official website www.collegeboard.com, in Bucharest the SAT can be taken at four test centers:

  • Fulbright Educational Advising Center;

  • American International School of Bucharest, Sos. Pipera-Tunari 196, Comuna Voluntari-Pipera; tel: 021 204 4300; website: http://www.aisb.ro/;

  • Bucharest Christian Academy, Str. Vasile Voiculescu nr. 26, sector 3, Bucuresti 031236; tel: 021 323 5887, 021 323 5408; website: : http://www.bcaromania.org/;

  • Tudor Vianu National High school, Str. Arhitect Ion Mincu nr.10, sector 1, Bucuresti; tel: 021 222 6670; website: http://www.lbi.ro.

You can take either the SAT Reasoning Test or up to three Subject Tests on a given test date.

What to expect on test day

On the test day, we recommend that you arrive at the center around 7:30 in the morning - according to official exam administration rules, students are admitted to the testing site starting 7:45 am. Full details about test day procedures are available on the official test site, here.

How much does the test cost?

According to the information available on the official website www.collegeboard.com for 2011-2012 academic year:

  • SAT Reasoning Test costs 78 USD (49 USD = Reasoning Test + 29 USD = International Processing).

  • SAT Subject Tests cost 22 USD (Basic Registration Fee) plus 29 USD (International Processing). On top of this you’ll add 22 USD if you plan to take a foreign language test with a listening section, or 11 USD for all the other subjects.

The test fee entitles you to one score report, plus up to four official score reports that College Board will send directly to the institutions you designate when you register. For each institution you select after the test, you will have to pay a $10.50 fee. According to the information available on the official website and in the Registration Bulletin, College Board mails the score report to you and to your designated institutions approximately 5 weeks after you take the test.

How do I register for the test?

First you pick a test date - see information on available test dates posted on the official website www.collegeboard.com or on cover IV of the registration bulletin, then decide on the payment type (by credit/debit card or by bank check). Note: the card doesn’t need to be in your name, so you can use the cards of family or friends.

If credit/debit card (Visa, Master Card, discover, American Express) is available, you can register online at www.collegeboard.com. Go to the section “Register now”, sign in, then follow the steps. You can print your Admission Ticket from your College Board account.

If a credit/debit card is not available, then you can pay by bank check and register by mail.

  • In order to be issued a bank check you can approach any bank that conducts hard-currency transactions and pay the fee. The beneficiary of your bank check will be the SAT Representative for Europe announced on page 45 in the Paper Registration Guide. According to the information available, do not make checks made payable to the SAT Program or The College Board. Credit card payments are not accepted by SAT Representatives if you register by mail.

  • You fill in the “2011-2012 Registration Form” available in the bulletin. Then you mail the registration form with the bank check to the SAT representative for Europe. When filling out the registration form, you need to use black or blue ink. Do not use a pencil!

Useful tips:

  • Photocopy the registration form as well as the bank check and keep the copies for reference.

  • Send your test registration by registered mail (scrisoare recomandata cu confirmare de primire). If the early registration is approaching, you may like to send it by courier service to meet the deadline!

  • As a rule, information regarding the test date and location - the coordinates of the testing center - is mailed with your Admission Ticket.

  • If you don’t receive the Admission Ticket by mail at least a week prior to the test date, you must call College Board in the United States. Refer to the bulletin for contact information of College Board Customer Service.

YOU CANNOT REGISTER BY PHONE, FAX OR E-MAIL!

SAT registration bulletins are available only in printed form, they can’t be downloaded from the official website.

You can pick up the registration bulletin, free of charge, from the Fulbright Educational Advising Center, during public hours.

If you live outside Bucharest you can send the Fulbright Educational Advising Center a self-addressed stamped envelope (A4 size) with a note in which you mention the registration bulletin you need. You will receive it promptly.

Pay attention to registration deadlines!

  • According to the information available on cover IV of the registration guide: “International mail must be received (not just postmarked) by the deadlines. Students applying through an SAT International Representative must submit their registrations (with full payment) by the early registration deadline. Deadlines expire at midnight Eastern Time.”

  • If you miss the registration deadline, you can try to take the test as a STANDBY. A test center will accept standbys in the order of their arrival, only if sufficient space, test materials and staff are available. So you need to show up at the test center early. Further instructions on how to take the test as a standby is available in the SAT registration guide and on the official website www.collegeboard.com . Mind that you will have to include payment for the test fee plus the additional standby fee ($43 in the academic year 2011-2012).

When do I get the official scores?

According to the information available on page 5 of the Paper Registration Guide, your SAT score report will include the six most recent SAT and six most recent SAT Subject Test scores. Most, but not all, scores will be reported online several weeks after the test date. A full score report will be available to you online about a week and a half later. If you register by paper, your score report will also be mailed to you unless you indicate otherwise through your online account. Comprehensive score release and mailing dates are available on the official website.

How do I request additional score reports?

You can request additional scores online or by mail. You will be charged $10.50 fee for each institution you want scores to be sent to.

The fastest and easiest way to send additional scores is online. Payment can be made by debit or credit card.

If you order scores by mail, you need to complete the “Additional Score Report Order Form” (available from the College Board website) and send it with the bank check to the College Board in the United States.

Further instructions on how to request additional score reports online or by mail is available on the official website www.collegeboard.com

How long are scores valid?

The SAT scores are valid for 5 years.

What is the test good for?

The GRE revised General Test is one of the admission requirements to graduate program in the U.S. It is used in evaluating the applicant’s readiness for graduate-level work.

Introduced on August 1, 2011, the GRE revised General Test features, according to the official website http://www.ets.org/gre, new types of questions that more closely reflect the kind of thinking and skills you need to succeed in today's demanding graduate and business school programs. It is designed to provide a friendlier, more flexible test-taking experience.

What is it like?

The GRE revised General Test is available in the computer- and paper-based format. Overall testing time for the GRE revised General Test is about three hours and 30 minutes (paper-based test) and three hours and 45 minutes (computer-based test). There are six sections with a 10-minute break following the third section.

According to the information available on the official website http://www.ets.org/gre, the GRE revised General test includes the following scored sections:

  • Analytical Writing: this section features two separately timed writing tasks: “Analyze an Issue” and “Analyze an Argument”. You’ll have 30 minutes to solve each task. The analytical writing section will always appear as the first section of the test.
  • Verbal Reasoning: two 30-minute sections consisting of about 20 questions each;
  • Quantitative Reasoning: two 35-minute sections consisting of approximately 20 questions each.

In addition, an unidentified Verbal or Quantitative section that does not count toward your score may be included and may appear in any order after the Analytical Writing section. Be sure to do all sections presented, since you will not know which one will be scored. An identified research section that is not scored may also be included in the computer-based GRE revised General Test – this section is always at the end of the test.

The Analytical Writing section will always be first, while the other five sections may appear in any order.

Three scores are reported on the GRE revised General Test:

  • A Verbal Reasoning score reported on a 130 – 170 score scale, in 1-point increments;
  • A Quantitative Reasoning score reported on a 130 – 170 score scale, in 1-point increments;
  • An Analytical Writing score reported on a 0 – 6 score scale, in half-point increments.

In terms of test design, according to the official website http://www.ets.org/gre, the GRE revised General Test allows you to freely move forward and backward throughout an entire section. Specific features include:

  • Preview and review capabilities within a section;
  • A "mark and review" feature to tag questions, so you can skip them and return later;
  • The ability to change/edit answers within a section;
  • An on-screen calculator for the Quantitative Reasoning section;

  • New answer formats, including tasks such as numeric entry and highlighting a sentence in a passage to answer a question.

What is the test good for?
GRE-Subject is one of the requirements for admission to graduate programs in the U.S., especially for PhDs. The GRE Subject Tests can help you stand out from other applicants by emphasizing your knowledge and skill level in a specific area.

What is it like?

The test is offered in 8 subject areas:

  • Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology

  • Biology

The GRE-Subject maintains its traditional multiple choice, paper and pencil format. Each test takes 2 hours and 50 minutes to complete.

According to the information available on the official website, for each test you take, you will receive a total score on a 200 – 990 score scale, in 10-point increments. The Biochemistry; Cell and Molecular Biology; Biology; and Psychology Tests also yield subscores on a 20 – 99 score scale, in one-point increments. Both current scores and scores from the five years prior to the current testing year are included in your cumulative score report.

What is the test good for?

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required for admission to more than 4,700 graduate management programs at over 1,900 schools around the world. The GMAT helps graduate business schools assess the qualifications of applicants to an MBA program or any another advanced business program. The GMAT scores are considered a reliable predictor of the applicants’ academic performance in the first year of graduate management program. Nevertheless, the test does not require any particular knowledge in the business field, as mentioned in the GMAT Information Bulletin, on page 3. The GMAT Information Bulletin can be downloaded from the official website www.mba.com.

What is it like?

According to the information available in the bulletin and on the official website www.mba.com, the GMAT includes the following sections:

  • Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) consists of two 30-minute writing tasks – Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an Argument. The AWA is designed as a direct measure of your ability to think critically and to communicate your ideas.

  • Quantitative measures basic mathematical skills and understanding of elementary concepts, and the ability to solve quantitative problems and to interpret graphic data. 75 minutes are available for 37 multiple-choice questions.

  • Verbal includes questions testing reading comprehension, sentence correction, and critical reasoning. You will have to solve 41 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes.

The GMAT is a computer adaptive test (CAT), which means that the test questions are selected by the computer as you take the exam. The scores are based on the difficulty level of the questions answered correctly as well as on the number of questions answered.

Verbal and Quantitative scores range from 0 to 60. Analytical Writing scores range from 0 to 6 and are computed separately from the scores of the multiple-choice sections.
Total scores range from 200 to 800.

You may download a list of more than 300 sample AWA topics, as well as examples of each quantitative and verbal question type and directions for answering them, from www.mba.com. More test preparation materials are available online in the "How can I prepare for the test?" section below, as well as in the FEAC study room and computer center.

The fee entitles you to one online official score report for you and up to five reports that the GMAT Program will send directly to the institutions you designate at the test center, on the day you take the GMAT, before you start the exam. After the test, you will have to pay a $28 fee for each institution you want scores to be sent to.

How do I register for the test?

First you pick a test date and decide on the payment type - by credit/debit card or by bank check. Note: the card doesn’t need to be in your name, so you can use the cards of family or friends.

If a credit/debit card is available, you can register:

  • Online on the official website www.mba.com: in The GMAT section, go to Schedule a GMAT Appointment. You will need to sign up as a registered user of the mba.com website if you have not already done so. Make sure you enter your name and birthdate exactly as they appear on the identification you will present at the test center and that you have your VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or JCB card ready.

  • By Phone: call the Regional GMAT Customer Service responsible for your desired test location at least three business days before your intended test date. See page 4 in the bulletin for detailed contact information. Romania is included in the Europe/Middle East/Africa service area (e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ; phone: +44 (0) 161 855 7219, 9 am to 6 pm Greenwich Mean Time; Fax: +44 (0) 161 855 7301). Your confirmation number, appointment time and the address of your test center will be given to you when you call.

  • By Fax: complete the 3-page long GMAT Appointment Scheduling Form available on www.mba.com and send it to the Regional GMAT Customer Service responsible for the test location you have chosen. Be sure to include your credit card number on the form.

If a credit card is not available, you can pay by bank check and register by mail.

  • In order to be issued a bank check you can approach any bank that conducts hard-currency transactions and pay the fee. The beneficiary of your bank check will be PEARSON VUE–GMAT, as mentioned on page 5 of the Information Bulletin. The bank name and its location should be preprinted on the face of the check. Taxes must be included.

  • The check and the appointment form need to be mailed to the U.S. address (Pearson VUE; Attention: GMAT Program; PO Box 581907; Minneapolis, MN 55458-1907; USA) mentioned on www.mba.com.

  • The registration documents must be received at least 10 calendar days before the desired test date to allow for processing, so be sure to send them at least 3 weeks before the intended test date.

Useful tips:

  • Photocopy the appointment form and the bank check and keep the copies for reference.

  • Send your test registration by registered mail (scrisoare recomandata cu confirmare de primire).

  • Generally, you will receive your appointment confirmation by e-mail if you provide an e-mail address when you register. The confirmation includes information on the test date as well as the coordinates of the testing center. The Regional GMAT Service will schedule your appointment based on the information you provide. If none of the dates you requested is available, the GMAT Service will try to schedule you for a test date as close as possible to your choices.

  • If you don’t receive your appointment confirmation, you must call PEARSON VUE at least three business days before your first-choice test date. See page 4 of the bulletin for contact information.

In case you do not show up on your assigned day and hour for taking the test, the registration fee will not be refunded.

Retest policy
According to page 12 of the Bulletin, you may take the GMAT only once within 31 consecutive calendar days, and no more than five times within 12 consecutive calendar months. Also, if you score 800 on the test, you will be prohibited from retesting for five years from your exam date.

IMPORTANT:
The Fulbright Educational Advising Center is not involved in the administration of the GMAT. Therefore, please contact the company PEARSON VUE that administers the test for any remarks or questions concerning the registration, confirmation etc. The information bulletins include all the necessary contact addresses and telephone numbers. They can be downloaded from the official GMAT website.

If you do not have Internet access, you can access the GMAT Information and Registration bulletin at the Fulbright Educational Advising Center during public hours.

If you live outside Bucharest you can send the Center a large, self-addressed stamped envelope, with a note in which you mention the registration bulletin you need. You will receive it promptly.

When do I get the official scores?

According to the information available on www.mba.com, the official score report is available online to you and the designated score report recipients approximately 20 days after the test date. If you don’t have Internet access, you may request to have your scores mailed to you. Allow approx. 4 weeks after the test date for mail delivery.

Unofficial scores from the Verbal and Quantitative multiple-choice sections, along with the Total score, are available immediately after you complete the test. The Unofficial Score Report will also contain an authorization number that you will need to access your Official Score Report.

According to the Information Bulletin, Official Score Reports include all GMAT exams you have taken within the past 5 years. If you have taken the exam and canceled your scores, your report will note that scores are unreportable but not include what they were.

How do I request additional score reports?

You can request additional score reports online, by phone, fax or mail. The fee is $28 for each additional score report you request. If you send your scores to programs by ordering an Additional Score Report (ASR) after your testing experience, those programs will receive your scores in approximately seven (7) calendar days after your score has become reportable. See page 11 in the Bulletin for further details on how to order additional score reports.

How long are scores valid?
The GMAT scores are valid for 5 years.
