What is the test good for?
GRE-Subject is one of the requirements for admission to graduate programs in the U.S., especially for Ph.D.

What is it like?

The test is offered in 8 subject areas:

  • biochemistry, cell and molecular biology

  • biology

  • chemistry

  • computer science

  • literature in English

  • mathematics (rescaled)

  • physics

  • psychology.

GRE-Subject tests measure achievement in these specific subject areas and assume undergraduate majors or extensive background in those disciplines.

The GRE-Subject maintains its traditional multiple choice, paper and pencil format.

How is this test administered in Romania?

The test is administered in Arad and Iasi on the dates listed on cover IV of the information bulletin and posted on the official website.

How much does the test cost?

The GRE-Subject test costs $150. This fee entitles you to one score report, plus up to four reports that ETS will send directly to the institutions you indicate on your registration form or admission ticket correction stub. For each institution you select after the test, you will have to pay a $20 fee.

How do I register for the test?

First you pick a test date and decide on the payment type: by credit/debit card or by bank check.

Note: the card doesn't need to be in your name, so you can use the cards of family or friends.

If credit/debit card is available, you can register online on the official website. Go to the "Test Takers" section, click "Register for the Test" and follow the steps. You will get your Admission Ticket by e-mail.

If credit/debit cards are not available, the most convenient payment type is the bank check, and you will register by mail.

  • In order to be issued a bank check you need to pay the fee to any bank that conducts hard-currency transactions. The beneficiary of your bank check will be ETS-GRE, as mentioned on page 9 of the 2008-2009 GRE Information Bulletin.

  • You fill out the GRE Registration Form for Subject Test which is 4 pages long right in the middle of the bulletin.

  • You mail the check and the registration form to the U.S. address mentioned on the Registration Form. The registration documents must reach ETS by the registration deadline date (see cover IV). If you miss the registration deadline please see below the section "Standby testing".

Useful tips:

  • Photocopy the scheduling form as well as the bank check and keep the copies for reference.

  • Send your test registration by registered mail (scrisoare recomandata cu confirmare de primire).

  • As a rule, you will receive your Admission Ticket by regular mail. The Ticket includes information regarding the test date and the coordinates of the testing center.

  • If you don't receive the Admission Ticket at least seven working days prior to the test date, you must contact the ETS-GRE by phone or by fax using the contact information on page 6 in the bulletin.

In case you do not show up on your assigned day and hour for taking the test, the registration fee will not be refunded.

Standby testing:

If you missed the registration deadline, you can still try to test as a standby.
Standby testing may be available if sufficient space, test materials, and staff are available at the test center .
The standby testing fee of $50 is on top of the test fee. Further information on standby testing is available on page 8 in the GRE bulletin.

IMPORTANT:

The Fulbright Educational Advising Center is not involved in the administration of standardized tests. Therefore, please contact ETS-GRE for any problems you may experience concerning registration, receipt of the admission ticket, etc. The information bulletins include all the contact addresses and telephone numbers. They can be downloaded from the official website.

If you do not have Internet access, you can pick up the GRE Information and Registration bulletin free of charge from the Fulbright Educational Advising Center during public hours.

If you live outside Bucharest you can send the Center a large, self-addressed stamped envelope (A4), with a note in which you mention the registration bulletin you need. You will receive it promptly.

When do I get the official scores?

The score reports of the GRE-Subject test are mailed within 4-6 weeks to you and to the institutions designated on your registration form or admission ticket correction stub. See the back cover of the Registration Bulletin for approximate score report mailing dates.

How do I request additional score reports?

You can order additional score reports by phone, fax or by mail.
You will be charged a $20 fee for each institution you want scores to be sent to.

The additional score report request form is available in the middle of bulletin. Further instructions on how to order such scores are on the back of the form and on page 14 in the GRE bulletin. The form is also available on the official website.

How long are scores valid?
The GRE scores are valid for 5 years.

How can I prepare for the test?

When you register, you will be sent a free practice book that includes content topics covered in the test and detailed test specifications, a full-length test and answer key, and information to help you understand the scores you earn. You can also download the practice book from the GRE website.

The GRE-Subject preparation materials that are available at the Fulbright Educational Advising Center can only be checked out for study in the reading room and cannot be photocopied. To check out materials in the study room, you need a valid ID.
