What is the test good for? GRE-Subject is one of the requirements for admission to graduate programs in the U.S., especially for PhDs. The GRE Subject Tests can help you stand out from other applicants by emphasizing your knowledge and skill level in a specific area.
What is it like?

The test is offered in 8 subject areas:
GRE-Subject tests measure achievement in these specific subject areas and assume an undergraduate major or extensive background in the discipline tested.
The GRE-Subject maintains its traditional multiple choice, paper and pencil format. Each test takes 2 hours and 50 minutes to complete.
According to the information available on the official website, for each test you take, you will receive a total score on a 200 – 990 score scale, in 10-point increments. The Biochemistry; Cell and Molecular Biology; Biology; and Psychology Tests also yield subscores on a 20 – 99 score scale, in one-point increments. Both current scores and scores from the five years prior to the current testing year are included in your cumulative score report.
How is this test administered in Romania?
The test is administered in Arad and Iasi on the dates listed on page 35 of the information bulletin and posted on the official website. For details on test centers see the 2010-11 GRE Test Center and Code Lists, available at the FEAC and on
http://www.ets.org/gre/stupubs. Test dates for the 2010-2011 academic year are October 9 and November 13, 2010, and April 9, 2011.
How much does the test cost?
The GRE-Subject test costs $160. This fee entitles you to one score report, plus up to four reports that ETS will send directly to the institutions you indicate on your registration form or admission ticket correction stub. For each institution you select after the test, you will have to pay a $23 fee.
How do I register for the test?

First you pick a test date and decide on the payment type: mainly, by credit/debit card or by bank check. See page 14 of the Bulletin and the official website http://www.ets.org/gre to explore available payment methods.
Note: the card doesn't need to be in your name, so you can use the cards of family or friends.
If a credit/debit card is available, you can register online on the official website. You will need to create or have a My GRE Account to register. Credit/debit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover, JCB), as well as PayPal and Western Union Quick Pay services are accepted. Go to "Register for a Test" section and follow the steps. You will get your Admission Ticket by e-mail.
If credit/debit cards are not available, the most convenient payment type is the bank check, and you will register by mail.
In order to be issued a bank check you need to pay the fee to any bank that conducts hard-currency transactions. The beneficiary of your bank check will be ETS-GRE, as mentioned on page 14 of the 2010-11 GRE Information Bulletin.
You fill out the 4-page GRE Paper-based General Test and Subject Tests 2010-11 Registration Form available on pages 31-34 of the bulletin and on the official website.
You mail the check and the registration form to the U.S. address mentioned on the Registration Form (ETS-GRE, Box 382013, Pittsburgh, PA 15251-8013). The registration documents must reach ETS by the registration deadline date (see cover IV). All deadlines are receipt (NOT postmark) dates at ETS. If you miss the registration deadline please see below the "Standby testing" section.
Useful tips:
Photocopy the scheduling form as well as the bank check and keep the copies for reference.
Send your test registration by registered mail (scrisoare recomandata cu confirmare de primire).
As a rule, you will receive your Admission Ticket by regular mail approximately three weeks after you register. The Ticket includes information regarding the test date and the coordinates of the testing center. You can also view and print your ticket online with your My GRE Account.
If you don't receive the Admission Ticket at least 10 days prior to the test date, please print your Ticket or contact ETS-GRE immediately to confirm your test center assignment – you may contact them by phone or by fax using the contact information on page 8 in the bulletin.
In case you do not show up on your assigned day and hour for taking the test, the registration fee will not be refunded.
Standby testing:
If you missed the registration deadline, you can still try to test as a standby. Standby testing may be available if sufficient space, test materials, and staff are available at the test center . The standby testing fee of $50 is on top of the test fee. Further information on standby testing is available on page 10 of the GRE bulletin.
IMPORTANT:
The Fulbright Educational Advising Center is not involved in the administration of the GRE Subject tests. Therefore, please contact ETS-GRE for any problems you may experience concerning registration, receipt of the admission ticket, etc. The information bulletins include all the contact addresses and telephone numbers.
