International Conference “Embracing Linguistic and Cultural Diversity Through English”

Fulbright Senior Grantee Professor Monica Cure and Junior Grantee English Teaching Assistants Matthew Chernick, Courtney-Sophia Henry, and Mariah Ligas attended the International Cross-Borders Conference “Embracing Linguistic and Cultural Diversity through English” at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iasi, Romania and Yuri Fedkovych University in Chernivtsi, Ukraine. This innovative binational conference was a collaboration between the English departments at both universities, and was the first international conference of its kind at Yuri Fedkovych University. Papers were presented on a variety of English language, literature, and teaching topics and the participants enjoyed building relationships between Romanian, Ukrainian, American, European, and international academic communities, as well as the fantastic hospitality in both cities. The conference as a whole strengthened ties between the Romanian and Ukrainian universities and an ongoing collaboration is expected. The Romanian Fulbright Commission generously supported the participation of the Fulbright grantees.

Here is a short account by Sophia Henry: "On Thursday, October 12th, I journeyed to Iasi to present my work on indigenous language use in contemporary music at the 'Embracing Linguistic and Cultural Diversity Through English' international cross-border conference. In addition to enjoying panels on a variety of topics, including English as a lingua-franca in European higher education, I was able to network with colleagues from Ukraine, Germany, America, Poland, and Romania, among others. We also took a tour of several notable Ukrainian landmarks, including Khotyn Fortress and the city of Kamianets-Podilskyi. It was a wonderful experience and I'm very glad to have been able to participate!"
