Fulbright Program Receives Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation 

On October 24, 2014, King Felipe VI of Spain honored the Fulbright Program with the 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation at the grand ceremony held in Oviedo, Spain. The award was received by Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan together with a group of five Fulbright alumni. The event was attended by executive directors of Fulbright Commissions from across the world.

On this occasion, included in the program was also a Fulbright roundtable entitled A Bridge between Societies and Cultures based on People and a working session in which the EDs were addressed by Evan Ryan, Assistant Secretary of State, Meghann Curtis, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Academic Programs and Mary Kirk, Director of Academic Exchange Programs. Present at the session were also Tom Healy, FFSB Chairman (J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board), Mrs. Harriet Fulbright, Stephen Reilly, Executive Director of the Fulbright Association and Allan Goodman, President and Chief Executive Officer at IIE (Institute of International Education).

George Washington University Representative Visits the Polytechnic University and the School of Administration and Business

On Wednesday, October 22nd, the Fulbright Educational Advising Center/FEAC team facilitated three visits made by Ms. Britanny Wright, George Washington (GW) University representative, to the Polytechnic University and the School of Administration and Business within the University of Bucharest. Speaking on behalf of the International Programs and Admissions Office and the Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Science, Ms. Wright introduced the vast array of study programs at GW to Romanian students in the Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest as well as in the School of Administration and Business. The FEAC representative also presented information on the free-of-charge services and resources offered by the Fulbright Educational Advising Center, designed to help prospective applicants navigate the application process to U.S. universities in general.

This Friday, October 31st: Invitation to Seminar

The seminar “COMPETING FOR THE FULBRIGHT SENIOR AWARD: Making the Application Form and Preparing for the Interview Phase” will take place on Friday, October 31, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission.
Our guest speakers will offer guidance on how to complete the application as well as suggestions regarding the structure of the project statement. Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions about the Fulbright Senior interview, the second stage of the assessment process carried out in January for short-listed finalists.
For attendance please register by email at office@fulbright.ro by Thursday, October 30. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to limited space, only the first 25 participants may be accepted.

Live Chat with Dr. Gary Holcomb @ the Fulbright Educational Advising Center/FEAC

On Monday, October 20th, from 4pm, the Fulbright Educational Advising Center hosted a special live online seminar titled “Mentoring Romanian Students in the U.S.: A Fulbright Scholar’s View”, given by our distinguished guest, Dr. Gary Holcomb, Professor of African American Literature at Ohio University. Dr. Holcomb spoke about his experience as a mentor to Romanian students in the U.S., the institution of mentoring, differences between the Romanian and American education system and the successful careers some of his Romanian students went on to pursue. He kindly took questions from the audience – mainly M.A. students and graduates - offering expert advice on criteria worth considering when choosing a graduate program in the United States.

Yale Representative & FEAC Team Visit Sf. Sava High School

The Fulbright Educational Advising Center/FEAC had yet another distinguished guest this month. On October 13, we accompanied Mr. Keith Light, Yale University Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions, to Bucharest’s „Sf. Sava” High School for a presentation on opportunities to study at Yale and other Ivy League schools.
In his lively presentation, Mr. Light shared stories about life at Yale with the 60+ high school students present, highlighing the tremendous resources that Yale and Ivy League schools in general can offer, as well as the nurturing community and strong support network at Yale. He also spoke about financial aid opportunities and shared insider’s tips on the admission process. The FEAC team encouraged those with an interest in U.S. study opportunities to contact us at our center and to take advantage of the information and preparation materials available in our library and resource center.
