Pre-Departure Orientation for 2017-2018 Romanian Fulbright Grantees and Independent Students

On June 13, the Romanian - U.S. Fulbright Commission hosted its Pre-departure Orientation Seminar dedicated to the Romanian Fulbright grantees and independent students leaving for the U.S. to study or conduct research in the academic year 2017-2018.

The event began in the morning with a series of welcome speeches by distinguished guest speakers representing the U.S. Embassy in Romania, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Fulbright Board of Directors and the Romanian academia, who shared their thoughts on the Fulbright program and congratulated the grantees.

Throughout the day the Romanian Alumni together with several U.S. Grantees participated in panel discussions, offering practical information to the current grantees and independent students preparing to start their U.S.  experience. The Romanian Fulbright  alumni also shared personal impressions about their grant in the US, as well as about their return to Romania and re-adjustment. Specific details and advice on J&F visas were provided by Vice Consul Lindsey Whitehead, Consular Section, U.S. Embassy Bucharest, who joined us for a presentation and kindly answered questions from the addressees. This year the event also included a new section dedicated to the six scholars of the Fulbright-RAF Award program, who received useful pre-departure guidance from a RAF representative together with an alumnus of the RAF Scholar Award pilot program.

The following day a reception to honor the brand-new Romanian grantees, the alumni, officials, as well as scientific and cultural figures who have been supporters of this prestigious program, was hosted by HE Hans G. Klemm, the United States Ambassador to Romania, at his residence. Welcome addresses were delivered by HE Hans G. Klemm, the U.S. Ambassador to Romania, and Dr. Remus Pricopie, the Chair of the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission Board of Directors, who insisted on the importance of the Fulbright program and the extraordinary impact that cultural and scientific exchanges between our two countries have had. The festivity also celebrated participants in the Fulbright Capacity Building workshop, an international academic event organized by the Fulbright Commission, taking place throughout the week.

We wish all the best to the 2017-2018 group of Romanian students and scholars and look forward to hearing from them as they embark on their experience in the U.S.!
